Day 45 of 60 – The Secret to Weight Loss Success

Today’s juice really delicious: 2 handfuls kale, ¼ head red kohlrabi, small handful asparagus, small bunch cilantro, ½ cucumber, 3 stalks celery, 2 carrots, 2 green apples, 1 small piece ginger. This made just over 2 quarts.

success is the sumI’ve yo-yo’d and tried so many different plans, programs, diets, you name it I’ve probably tried it, and probably been successful, too. Well, I got my doctorate from the school of life and in my experience; nothing beats common sense eating habits and exercise. And here’s my secret to weight loss success (taking it off and keeping it off) – Consistency.

Any of us can be successful at something for a while, but we fall back into old unhealthy habits when we are not consistent. For example I used to study karate very seriously and when you’re working out with karate 3-4 hours a day, you can eat anything you want. When you stop working out 3-4 hours a day, but keep the same eating pattern, well, you end up like me…

Let’s talk diet

It is really not rocket science - Be good to yourself, you deserve it.

It is really not rocket science – Be good to yourself, you deserve it.

I tried the Atkins diet once and it worked, I really shed the pounds, but I was absolutely miserable, blew up at folks for almost no reason and it was something I just could not sustain. Same with the weird cabbage or grapefruit type diets – they may be okay for a quick loss, but its not something I could live with forever.

There’s no getting around it, if I eat fatty foods, I get fat. I’m not one for moderation and I am not satisfied with “a couple bites” of something.

So I know from the last time I did my 60-day juice fest that this time I just have to be mindful and consistent with my food choices. There is no reason to label a double cheeseburger – its fat and if I eat it I will be too.

When I come off my juice fest in a couple weeks (wow!) I’m sticking to a plant based diet – this works for me because I LOVE veggies. The only dairy I’ll miss will be cheese, yet I’ve already decided I will, on occasion, use parmesan, feta and blue cheese in recipes.  Since making this decision, I’ve come across the most delicious and hearty plant based and vegan recipes 0 can’t wait to start chewing again – ha!

Let’s talk exercise

Last time I did my juice fest I was working the Power 90 program and the C25K program as well – I felt great! Then I went to a local fitness “expert” who told me to stop – everything I was doing was wrong; wrong technique, wrong order of progression, and he was going to create a workout program just for me to build on what I’d been doing and to take me to the next level, working out efficiently & effectively. I quit what I was doing awaiting his email or phone call… I called and emailed him… never heard from him, meanwhile, my routine was upended and my momentum lost.

running girlIf you’ve been following my blog, you know I’m exercising with my RevAbs program from Beachbody. Brett is kicking my butt and I’m already in week 2. When that 90-day program is over, I’ll pick another program and just keep going, maybe switch out between Turbo Jam, Power 90 and RevAbs doesn’t matter what it is as long as it is every day. So far I’ve enjoyed every program I’ve gotten through Beachbody.

I enjoyed learning something about myself with the C25K program, too, that I could do it – consistently. Even in the rain. Wow! Yet something else I learned; I get very bored with running – just not my thing.

So find what works for you, find what you enjoy, what you can stick with and then just do it, every day, even just putting on some good music and dancing for 20 to 30 minutes. The secret to weight loss success is really no secret; there is no magic wand; its doing what you already know is right for you every day.
